The dictionary defines a niche: as “A place or position suitable or appropriate for a person or thing”. What is a niche for affiliate marketing? We will discuss this, about niches.
So what is your niche? Do you love golf? How about child care? Maybe music is your great love? Are you fascinated with the financial area?
There are many hundreds if not thousands of niches which are a distinct segment of a market, in other words, an “audience”.
When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, or a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don’t need to BE an expert, you can BECOME an expert. though research and study.
Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in.
Why is there a Need for a Niche?
Now, why is there a need for a niche? The whole idea is to monetize your website or article so you can have an online business and work from home.
Let’s take a look at some ways to have a business with your niche as the main theme or product.
1. Affiliate Marketing. This type of marketing is when you become an affiliate with a larger company than your own business. This could be Amazon.com, Target, Sporty’s Pilot Shop, or any one of hundreds of companies that do business in your niche.
You advertise on your website through articles that you produce and link to the main company (Amazon for example).
When someone visits your article/website and clicks on the link to Amazon and buys something that Amazon sells, you get a commission.
The best thing about this arrangement is that Amazon takes care of all the Customer Service…the shipping, inventory, returns, complaints, etc. and you get the commission.
The commission rate may vary with each company and even within the company you affiliate with.
2. Drop-Shipping. This is very similar to Affiliate Marketing in procedure and method. The main difference is you have to order for your customer, but the Drop Shipper will take care of all Customer Service tasks.
The second difference between Affiliate Marketing and Drop Shipping is that most Drop Shippers require you to pay an annual fee which can be up to $500 or more depending on the Drop Shipper.
Since a Drop Shipper will sell the product to you at wholesale (you don’t have to actually handle the product, this is just a paperwork exercise) you will receive the difference between retail and wholesale.
3. Direct Sales This method of marketing is all about your selling a product through your own abilities.
You can find a company that will sell you the product that you have decided on, at a wholesale price.
You maintain the inventory, advertise through your website, collect the funds from the customer, handle returns, and other customer service-related issues.
If the product that you want to sell is more informational, you could write an e-book. You would still perform the related customer service matters.
This type of marketing would be the most challenging but could be very rewarding.
You would be totally responsible for your business’s success or failure.
Let us take a look at a few examples of niches in more detail:
Sports
A. Golf– If you are a golf “nut” you probably know what is the best brand of golf clubs, balls, bags, shoes, and all the other paraphernalia a golfer needs. You would either contact a golf company that has an affiliate program or for direct or drop shipping concepts, contact a wholesale golfing firm.
B. Sports Equipment– This might be a “catch-all” for all other sports interests such as bats, balls, gloves, swimming masks, snorkels, shoes, and many other items. The same principle applies as in #1-3 above, contact the appropriate company of the sport of your interest for an affiliate program or to buy wholesale and sell retail.
Health Care
A. Natural Health These niches could range from health products to vitamins to natural cures, healthy recipes, and so forth.
B. Health and Wellness There are products for the gym and exercise.
C. Essential Oils There are many natural oils that fall into this category.
Automotive
A. Newsletters about Specialty, Sports Cars, and Pick-Up Trucks.
B. E-Books on Automotive Repair.
C. Pictures on Antique Cars
Artistry.
A. Cosmetics/Make-Up Instructions and Products.
B. Art Supplies.
C. Various Art Prints.
Music
A. Musical Instruments.
B. Instrument Instructions (Learning to Play.)
C. Collector’s Records and CDs.
Personal Growth.
A. E-Books on Self-Improvement
Travel.
A. Affiliate Partnership with Airlines and Travel Agencies.
B. Souvenirs of Vacation Spots.

This is just a small list of possible niches, but hopefully, this may give you a few ideas, depending on your interests/passions.
